WHAT DO THE REFUGEES NEED TO KNOW WHEN COMING TO ATLANTIC CANADA?
In the coming year, many refugees from Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, will be coming to Canada to stay as guests for a long time. This is for their safety and well being. Our page is based on the things that these natives should know when they arrive.
MONEY:
The guests should know that we have a different money currency than the refugees. When you are transferring your money, what you may count as 'one dollar' could be more or less than our dollar. We have coins as well as bills, and money changes frequently. For instance, a few years back, our pennies (one cent) were discontinued. We have the highest Visa rates in the world. We have different coloured depending on the value of bill. Ex: 5$ is a blue bill, and 50$ is a red bill. We use checks, and we have bank accounts to store your money in. Our tax is 13% of the price of your purchase.
RESPECT:
You have all rights to whatever sexual orientation you have, homosexual and heterosexual marriages are free and legal in this country. Any form of abuse to these relationships or any relationship of your own (friends, girl/boyfriends, family etc.) will be punished by fine or jail. Refugees should also know that women have the right to say no to anything and are treated as equals to males.
CLIMATE:
Winters here, are long and cold. You should come prepared with proper gear: fur lined boots, parkas, mittens, hats, and scarves. Winters here can go from the span of November to mid March. The snow comes in large amounts, and the temperature has drops up to -35 to -40 degrees Celsius throughout the winter season. Prepare!
LAW:
There are no guns or any form of illegal military weapons allowed without a signed license. Any weapons of such illegal use will be confiscated. It is not accepted to ask children of any age to work for you without their parental and self agreement. The work zone must be danger free. A child is unable to do many jobs until at least 14 years of age.
We drive on the RIGHT side of the road, following the rules of the road. It takes about a year to get your full license, starting with your beginners at age 16. You will take multiple road and written tests. Legal drinking age is 19 years.
LANGUAGE:
We are a bilingual province. Our languages are English and French. Either one is very possible to learn, as overwhelming as it is. There are courses to take to learn either language, for any age.
TECHNOLOGY:
Our technology is up to date. We have tablets, apple products, android products, and many other kinds of laptops, phones, and other tech. It may seem complicated to catch on to at first, but from using it so often in daily life, you will catch on soon enough.
